Re: need help firing order
sbc firing order is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 in a clock wise direction. No. 1 on the dizzy will normally point towards the no. 1 cylinder, which is the first one on the drivers side of the car

The spark plugs don't have to be in order, but the spark plug wires need to go from the distributor to the spark plugs in the proper order.

Re: need help firing order
The above information is a little misleading to someone who isn't mechanically inclined.
18436572 is the firing order. The rotor in the distributor turns clockwise.
#1 cylinder is the one that's the most forward. On chev's, that would be the front driver's side plug. Chev cylinders are 1357 on the driver side and 2468 on the passenger side.
#1 on the cap can be anywhere but it depends where the rotor is pointing when the #1 cylinder piston is at TDC. Normally, it's in the 5 o'clock position roughly pointing towards the #1 cylinder.
The easiest and safest way to replace plug wires if you're unsure on the firing order or position is to replace them one at a time. It's very common to have 5 and 7 mixed up because the wires and plugs are next to each other.
If you've pulled the distributor, you need to drop it back in with the rotor pointing to the proper post on the cap in relation to which cylinder is at the firing position. Normally it's all done with #1 at TDC. If the rotor isn't in the correct position and needs to be turned, it's possible the oil pump drive also needs to be turned using a screwdriver so they both line up.
