car won't start, possible VATS, help please?
car won't start, possible VATS, help please?
1989 TBI 305 T/A
Hey guys... So my daily driver is out of commission, luckily it decided to not start while in my driveway so I'm not stranded. Here's the story. Turn the key nothing happens. The radio turns off, as if it wants to do what it normally does but then nothing. no noise, no dimming of lights as if it was even engaging the starter. I've been reading the forum and it seems like VATS is the problem, but I don't know how to preform the other tests that you guys have done.
- on the starter there are three screws, 2 with wire's on them and one that has a copper looking pole coming out of it that connects to the bigger cylinder... which screws do i short to see if the starter will turn?
-with the VATS resistor on the key... is it possible to just test the key without taking everything apart? I already did and it measures at 9.56 kilo ohms. Would that be an inaccurate reading cause it's straight from the key? also what color are the wires that go to the ignition for VATS
I've also read about something called a neutral safety switch and the ignition relay, I have no idea what they look like or where they are located? If some one could shed some light on that, it would be incredible... I really need to get this thing fixed today as I have school and work tomorrow... so any help would be really really appreciated! thanks

Re: car won't start, possible VATS, help please?
So nobody replied, but I went ahead and tried to figure everything out myself... Turns out it was VATS, This forum and it's plethora of information is amazing. I spliced resistors in series totaling the ohms that my key had, into the wires coming from the ECU. It worked! car is up and running. Thought I'd just seal the thread since a lot of the issue's here seem to never have the person posting the resolution.
