Are LS1's Really THAT Powerful???
I am assuming this guy had an LS1 because I have never been beaten this bad in my entire life.
Last night I was cruising down the highway at about 70MPH, when I noticed someone in a black 4th Gen Camaro repeatedly pulling out in front of me and then falling back. I stomped it and so did he but I had to immidiately shut it down because there was some soccer mom in a minivan in front of me
.
So then I changed lanes and went flying past him and watched in my rearview mirror as he changed lanes directly behind me. Botrh me and the bgirlfriend watched in the mirrors as he stalked me for a bit, and I quickly ratcheted down into 3rd knowing all hell was about to break loose since the roads were wide open at this point. He then changed into the lane right of me and I immidiately STOMPED the gas. I watched in disbelief as this guy FLEW like a bat out of hell past me, and within 5 seconds had pulled about 10 cars. I had the pedal to the floor and absolutely COULD NOT catch him and at this point I've got this look on my face like WTF!?!?!?!
I just shut it down because there was no way I was going to downshift into 2nd and redline my engine with only 3500 on the odometer.
Even with full headerback exhaust, SLP runners and port matched plenum and a brand spanking new longblock assembly, it was like this guy had a supercharger ow a 100 shot of NOS. I was in awe.

Re: Are LS1's Really THAT Powerful???
Since i am a previous owner of a 99 Trans-Am, I will tell you the LS1 is a powerhouse of a motor even in stock form. At a underrated 300+ HP, I was stomping stock EVO's all day long. With a acceleration of 5.6 seconds 0-60, any mildly built third gen will have lot of troubles trying to toy with one. ( not trying to flame you or your car.)

Re: Are LS1's Really THAT Powerful???
I know this much, they're fast, especially w/ a few mods and the right tune put on them, they rev fast and make big power. You never know he could of had a built LT1? Any really built motor will stomp on our cars in stock form, even w/bolt ons or a cam.
This is why I went to a 500+ HP 383 that makes power up to 6800 rpm. W/ 3.42 gears I can run w/the bigboys. I was tired of getting the smackdown put on me, w my 305. Just keep in mind the limits of engine size and what it's designed for. The 305 pulls and has plenty of bottom end torque, it is not meant to run all out against high revving motors..... Just be careful out there...

Yeah, those LS1s have *****. Even a few fairly minor modifications and that motor wakes up even more. Just means we have to work harder to win.

Well good for you.I`m pretty sure we`re refering to stock type n/a 305 tpi,tbi thirdgens. As if you`re not aware of that.It would be great if we could all have 305`s that would stomp LS1`s but thats not the norm.

Worst thing you could have done was race him from a roll. Those engines have awesome top end. The only way I can beat one is ripping him out of the hole. And by 50 they are already catching up fast. If I don't nail the launch, good night.

As a current owner of a 00 WS6 I can say that it is definitely a fun car to drive. Slower than my GTA but the power feels different. Sophisticated as compared to the raw power in my thirdgen.
GM has a winner in the LSx engines.

Re: Are LS1's Really THAT Powerful???
The LS engines are truly a modern wonder! My 427 LS is so hard to beat! Parts are terribly expensive, though. The odds are that wasnt a totally stock LS-1 if he beat you that badly, though.
I agree with IROCThe5.7L; I can cruise at about 45 mph, drop third and stand on it and even with DOT Drag radials, I have to fight to keep it straight! Some where on youtube is a video of my RS going up against a Z-06 from a roll (About 15 MPH. Was taken from his car while he was following me) Its kind of embarassing, because I almost sideswiped the Vette when the rear breaks loose! Beat him though...
Video is called "Insane camaro with stroker LS-7.." or something like that... Was added about a year and a half ago.

Re: Are LS1's Really THAT Powerful???
let me straigten this out
she pulled ahead of me but could not pull away
we were at like 80-90mph and I had 2.73's under mine and I am sure she had 3.42 prob.
my car just held the rpms a little longer in 2nd and 3rd because of the governor and a few other tranny mods
I have not delusions of spanking a ls car with a 305
the motor I run now
another story

Re: Are LS1's Really THAT Powerful???
Having owned and modified LSx for the past 10 years on 3 different cars...both NA and FI...the simple answer is yes.
Here is a link that will show you what better flowing heads and intake will do on a smaller displacment motor (346cid). Keep in mind the 4th Gen is heavier then a 3rd Gen too.

That is true the 4thgens are heavier. Lots of people think that because they have plastic fenders and door panels that they are lighter.

Re: Are LS1's Really THAT Powerful???
The LS1 is a different kind of power, brutal but refined.
I prefer the thirdgen because the car is much more barbaric, but so is it's power. It might not be pretty or easy, but it get's the job done.

A few of the CA guys (with the exception of me, mine is stock) have completely smog legal cars that hang and even smoke on LS1's. Check out the southern ca section.

Re: Are LS1's Really THAT Powerful???
my buddy brackets his 01 LS1 Camaro, 13.00 all day long stock motor. Only mods are ET Streets and richmond 3.73 gears....fast cars...it could have been a mild lt1 car too my other buddies 97 LT1 T56 screams down the highway, no problems at all...No offense but it would not be hard for a stock ls1 or LT1 car to pull on an LB9 car even with your mods...

Re: Are LS1's Really THAT Powerful???
Yeah they aren't a problem anymore, have only been beaten by one and it was a built LS7 in a vette. You have to admit they are a great motor. If and when I build another engine, I believe I'd like to go that route....

I was surfing YouTube and thought I'd post this video which is a perfect reinactment.
The way this trans am pulls away is pretty much exactly what this guy did to me.

Re: Are LS1's Really THAT Powerful???
Hey that vid is part of the f-body lives video. I love that video. and the car taking the video is a Cadillac. I love how it doesn't even bother trying to keep up. It just watches in disbelief. Id have to say id love to own an ls motor. Specifically the ls7 motor. That would be loads of fun. mmmm power. My buddy used to have a 01 ls1 camaro (until he got drunk at hit a deer and ditch at 75, then left the car there for the police to find). That car was alot of fun. I had the pleasure of driving it on the expressway twice(road trip!). I loved the power and loved the constant pull avaible. I have to agree with previous posts; its a totally different feel of power though. I actually like the feel of the older brute force kind of power instead of the more safisticated hidden power. Thats the only way i can describe it.

Re: Are LS1's Really THAT Powerful???
my 00 ss made 495 rwhp with stock crank, .060 over 6.0 block, stock rods, hyper. pistons, and oem 243 heads with a rev 2.02 valves, with back cut and i did some light porting on the intake mostly clean up around valve throat, and just hit the exhaust port with a clean up. with lt headers, self made 3" exhaust, TREX cam, and ls6 intake with self ported tb. it made that power with friends tune thru m6, stock rear, spec3+ clutch. cars runs HARD and is 375ci using stock parts.

Re: Are LS1's Really THAT Powerful???
My dual cat LT1/6-spd car is considerably faster than any stock 3rdgen I've ever driven... LB9/T5 or L98/Auto cars. I've never had a problem running away from a stock TPI car, 5.0 or 5.7, T5 or auto.
The LS1s I do have a hard time with though, with my LT1. With a good start, I can get the jump on them off the line, but its never long before they catch up and run away. They are VERY quick once they get moving.
I have no real mods on my LT1 car... factory Hurst shifter, catback from a '99 LS1 Camaro (same system, better looking tips) and thats it really.
So yes... LS1s really ARE that powerful. Most bone-stock LS1/T56 F-cars dyno around 300-310 rwhp, which is in the neighborhood of 340-360hp at the flywheel. IMO, the LT1 is criticised unfairly though... its definitely got more in it, stock, than 270hp. Probably around 300-310 at the flywheel if I had to guess.
