oil leaking

I know it's not a thirdgen, but i have a 1974 firebird that has oil leaking from under the front of the car. I got under the car and checked it out, it looked odd because it's leaking from under the front of the engine right under where the water pump/crank pulley is. I saw it dripping from one of the hoses that goes to/from the oil pump, i wiped it off and found no leaks, it was just drippin g from there. I looked around under there and saw that there was oil on the crankshaft pulley and it looked as if it was being strewn all over because whereever the oil is leaking from it is hitting the spinning crank pulley spraying it on the bottom of the engine. I'm thinking it could be dripping from above the crank pulley and it's spraying down from there, any ideas? thanks in advance

Re: oil leaking

Well I would guess a timing chain cover leak. I assume its a pontiac motor so im not overly familiar with how their layed out but that would be my guess.

Re: oil leaking

More than likely its the front crank seal. The harmonic balancer will have to come off to replace it. Luckily they are slip fit so a puller/installer isn't need. Unluckily, the mounting bolt torques at 160 ft. lbs. so you'll have to rig up something to keep the engine from turning. If its a manual trans car you can put it into gear and set the parking brake.

Or use an impact wrench if you have air.
