get all kine problems
get all kine problems
As I drive my car more im running into all the problems. It is a 1987 305 tpi converted to carb. First off when you floor it sometimes nothing happens, if your in netral when this happens engine will stall, if your in gear the moving of the tires will keep the engine alive, this doesn't happen all the time but it is really annoying. Also when you floor it their is a really loud sound coming from engine, Its like a rattling but not really, its only when flooring it, letting off the gas even a little will stop the noise. Another thing is when you put in the clutch when the car is in gear it makes a loud clunk, in netral clutch doesn't make any noise and if you shift it really slow it doesn't make this clunk. The last problem it has so far is if you take a sharp turn the engine dies, kinda bad when your on a turn and your power steering is gone. Mahalo for your help

Re: get all kine problems
Ok, lets tackle this one problem at a time! This is a mess.
- What type of carb do you have?
- This sounds like a pump shot/accelerator pump problem. Look down the bores and see if you can see a pump shot being squirted in.
- A "loud sound"? What the heck kind of description is that? C'mon man, this isn't a tupperware party, we need more info. Only when under load? Sounds like detonation? Could be related to the above problem, ie going lean under load...
- Check tranny mount
- What type of tranny is this anyway? Stock T5 ? Hydraulics I trust?
- Check TA mount
- Check float level.
Is this a brand new carb? Used? Rebuilt? Did you tune it for this engine?

Re: get all kine problems
for the fast/sharp turn bit, i used to get the same problem running an edelbrock carb, it was caused by the fuel in the bowl sloshing all to one side so the cylinder bank facing the inside of the turn got no fuel and the outside bank was flooding... dunno what edelbrock's solution is, i went back to the qjet, but if it's a qjet it should have a plastic block that sits at teh top of the bowl above the float level to prevent the fuel sloshing around. what kind of carb is it?
Re: get all kine problems
It is an edelbrock carb. I don't know that much about carbs as this is my first one so its not tuned. It doesn't really sound like a detonation more like a really metallic sund, like a piece of metal in the cylinder. It sounds really bad, its hard to describe though. Yes it is the T-5 transmission, i will go ahead and order new transmission mounts

well first check your tranny mounts before ordering some, dont wanna spend money where you dont need to. ive had bad luck with edelbrock to. try a holley. i prefer them.
