Cranking won't start, narrowed problem but.....

I swapped out my destroyed 84 L69 for a 87 LG4. It refused to start first just clicking at me. I've got it cranking great, got fuel, got air, and I don't recall if I have spark but I have 12 volts at the distributor. I've narrowed it down to timing. Only issue is when I looked up the ignition timing a conflict came up.

According to Motor Repair Manuals, the 84 L69 timing should be 6 degrees BTDC, the 87 should be TDC. The question is where to start here? I've swapped out everything on the LG4 for L69 components except for the Block, Heads, Intake Manifold and internals.

Any advice here?

I Usually shoot for 8-10-12* of advance (BTDC). Either way the motor should atleast try to fire at 6* and even at 0*. I'd make sure you don't have the distributor in 180* off.

I originally did put it in 180 degrees off. I caught that while it was out of the car. Now its in the right way. But if I recall right, I think that the timing mark was timed before the timing marks even started. Upon seeing it in the book I realize we mis-read the timing marks and it is really more than 20 degrees off TDC. So suggest I start with 6? The car is at home in NJ I am in KS now and won't be home to try it til the end of March. Just trying to solve the problem as much as I can so I am not wasting time when I get home.
