no spark?

i just installed my summit ignition box, and the unit turns on, but the car will only rotate and not fire. i dunno if its my battery cause its only getting 12 volts before i turn the key and then about 8 volts when i crank it. is that the problem or the box?

Re: no spark?

The 8V at crank is a little low, but still pretty normal. It should still fire.

Re: no spark?

Does it lose power entirely when you crank it? If thats the case where did you pick up power for the ignition box? It sounds like you tapped off power to the toggle switch from a wire with power only in the run position and not the start you obviously need power in both positions.

your totally right i went down and sure enough it was turning off when cranking. i just tapped it into the distributor coil power lead that is no longer used with the box. starts up great now.

Re: no spark?

Well theres an ECM IGN fuse in the top left corner of your fuse pannel that has power in the start position and the crank position. Seeing as how you dont have much in the line of writing for the different fuses, its a red 10A it should be the only 10A fuse in any of the corners so it shouldnt be too hard to pick out. The wire you should tap is the pink one (thats the one thats after the fuse) so your circuit will be protected. I have a factory manual for the 83 camaro (probably the same as the 84) and it has a nice diagram of the fuse block, its lableing, and fuse sizes. Ill see if i can scan it and find a way to post it.

Re: no spark?

Yea if you leave it hooked up the way it is now it will work just as its supposed to. Now when you say you rev up the car and it will shut off do you mean like it will kinda hesitate and die out or does it get to a certant RPM and cut out? First off ide say check your connections as the motor and cor rocks from rev it may easily cause you to lose your 12 V running to the control box. Next ide check the timing to make sure its still as it should be. After that ide take it out for a run and see if it still does this when the cars warm. Finally the summit control boxes can have an optional rev limiter built in. If you have one you may want to look into what its set at. One last question was the dar running well befor you installed the ignition box?

ok i reved it up for the first time and it just reeved and then rpms dropped and shut off. i tried it again and it aint doing it no more. i think my electric pump didnt prime it right so mighta ran outa fuel it dont have a rev limiter in it. car was running before i put it in too.
