Input Shaft Bearing?
Input Shaft Bearing?
Hello, I posted a topic a while back of a whining noise coming from the transmission of a 91 Camaro RS. It's a 305 with a manual transmission.
With the symptoms I mentioned it everyone that posted was in agreement that it was the input shaft bearing. I have since bought the bearing, but have been putting the job off, namely because it seems like quite a difficult task for a novice mechanic.
So my question is this, is this bearing inside the transmission or outside where it bolts to the engine, near the bell housing? Is there anything I need to do to prepare the bearing I have for installation? I think I'm not supposed to touch it with bare hands while installing it.
If someone could give me a description on what to do that would be great, the auto zone haynes repair manual I bought for the car is pretty much useless and has no information regarding the specifics of this job.
Thank you in advance.

Re: Input Shaft Bearing?
You have to take the input shaft out to change it. There's a diagram here: http://www.mackstrans.com/images/dia...T5-Diagram.jpg #1 is the input shaft bearing. The bearing is pressed onto the shaft so you're probably going to need some professional help.

I see....thanks. I guess I'm gonna have to fork out some cash on this on this one, since doing it myself doesn't seem to be an option.
However on base they have an auto hobby shop with all kinds of tools, I'm thinking that perhaps they have whats needed to remove the old bearing and put on the new.

Re: Input Shaft Bearing?
Well I guess I'll post it here instead of starting a new thread....
Another problem I've been having is the serpentine belt squeaks, even after being replaced. I applied a marginal amount of belt dressing to it with no affect. It's a self-adjusting belt so....not sure what to do with that one.

Re: Input Shaft Bearing?
take the belt off and start turning pulleys by hand i have a feeling that you will find the airpump or the A/C compressor pulleys are the true culprits
