Need help installing distributor?
I need some advice installing my distributor again.
I have done a TPI swap and I am about to install the distributor again.
I didn't mark where it was before and the engine have been turned since that.
When I look in to my Haynes manual for 82-92 Camaros, It stands like this:
Take out spark plug #1. Front of drivers side. Turn crankshaft cloclwise until you feel compression with your finger out the hole. When you feel compression, turn crankshaft further until the timing mark reaches the 0 point at the marker. Then put distributor in engine facing between nr #1 and nr #8.
I tried to do that but I can't get the distributor to face them. My distributor fits when facing nr #1.
Or I could turn it 180 degrees and the distributor will fit also. I could not move the distributor 1 teeth and try because it wouldnt fit. The is just 2 special spots. I think that is because when I look under the distributor there is a "LINE" in the middle that have to fit somewhere on the crankshaft??
Can anyone help me out here??...There is just one mark on the balancer that I could follow. Not any white marks or anything. hat BIG mark looks almost like it is sawed in so I couldn't be wrong in that one.
Pleace help me out. Any suggestions appreciated...

Re: Need help installing distributor?
get a long straight screw driver and you need to line up the oil pump shaft with the slot on the bottom of your distributer

Re: Need help installing distributor?
Make sure you have the number one cylinder on compression stroke than line up the line on the balancer the line with the number zero on your timing tab on the front of your motor, now you have to line up the oil pump shaft so it is in line the the slot on the bottom of your gear on the distributor. Look down the distributor hole with a flash light and you will see the oil pump shaft and you will the the slot in the end of it. take your distributor in your hand and line the rotor up with the number one sparkplug wire and look at the gear and see where the slot is and take a long straight screw driver and line the oil pump shaft up so it will line up the the gear when you drop the distributor in and it will fall into place, you might have to wiggle it around a few times or make small adjustments to the oil pump shaft to get it right but it is not hard, you will figure it out..I hope this helps

your rotor should face forward towards the number one cylinder somewhat, just make sure when it goes it it lines up the the number one sparkplug wire on your cap..it fires in this order..18436572

Re: Need help installing distributor?
This is no help but.....
The oil pump tab is what I've always loved about old air cooled VW engines. You could put the dizzy in blindfolded. The tab is offset & the dizzy will only go in ONE WAY. Its right, or it isn't in. Easy as that.
Why didn't everyone else do it that way?
