Vibration Damper Clearance

Hey guys, I am installing my vibration damper on my engine for the first time. I'm using the old school beat it with a mallet technique, and I was wondering at what point should I stop hitting it. What type of clearance from the timing cover am I looking for, or is it damn near snug up on it. Thanks for the help

I usually do it by putting the crank pulley on, and getting it lined up with the accessory pulleys. It's not possible to put it on too far, at some point it stops going down.

Sean,

What Ward was saying is a good way of judging it. Thats the same thing I was going through when I first installed my harmonic balancer. Attach the pulley and turn it over with the accessory pulleys attached. Post what happens.

Re: Vibration Damper Clearance

Well heres the thing, its sitting on a stand in my apartment, so I don't even have the water pump on yet, I figured it was best to beat the **** out of the damper before I thew on the water pump and accessory pulleys. Would you suggest putting on the pump first?

Ok, turns out that was a good idea, I mock bolted the water pump and pulleys on, and the damper looks like it has another quarter inch to go to line up with everything. I appreciate the ideas fellas. I'll let you know how it turns out.

You want it to butt up to the crank timing gear, which should be on the crank as far as it can go.

Drive it on until it doesn't move anymore. Not sure what you're using for a mallet, but the sound changes noticeably when it "arrives".

A damper installer is better for your thrust bearing. They can be loaned or rented.

Re: Vibration Damper Clearance

Hey guys, i just wanted to say thanks for the help. I managed to get the damper on perfect today. The trick with linning it up with the water pump pulley worked. I had to happy gilmore the damper a couple times with the mallet, but it all worked out.
