Fuel Pressure Regulator issue?
89 TA- 89K miles 305v8 all original
Car starts after a few tries. Powerful exhaust smell. Drive for about 5 minutes and it starts running like crap and have a hard time getting it back home. Neighbor said it is probably Fuel Pressure Regulator.
Anybody had this problem or any ideas what else could cause it??
how hard to replace or anyway to test it?
Follow my wife in the car and I could smell exhaust bad. like it was dumping gas out the exhaust , vapor not liquid. car does use too much gas so that is what is feels like to me, but i don't know fuel ijection well.
appreciate any help. amy have to take to shop, but 3 haven't found problem yet. two thought it was an injector, but i had another shop test them and they were all fine. but these are firestone type shops and they don't seem to knowhow to troubleshoot it. Be nice to fix it myself.
Thanks
Michael

I assume this is a TPI engine. Correct?
Is the SES light coming on? If so, have you read what trouble codes are being set?
A bad O2 sensor can cause rich running. To check the fuel pressure regulator, get a fuel pressure gauge on it.

Re: Fuel Pressure Regulator issue?
I used to use a gauge similar to this one to test my fuel pressure. Now I have an in-line fuel pressure gauge under the hood.
Like five7kid said, is there a service engine soon light coming on? That would give you a direction to start in.
