which is the better stock head on a stock 350

i have 2 sets of heads. gm 14101083 and gm 14102193
can anyone tell me which of the 2 are best? I'm trying to deside which to put on my tpi 350 in a 91 z-28 5-speed. The motor is all stock gm 14093638 roller rockers.

Re: which is the better stock head on a stock 350

083 are what would have come stock on a 91 Z28 350. 193 heads are swirl port TBI truck heads. They make great torque down low and provide good gas mileage but are not good for power.

Essentially, it depends on your application. However, most likely you want the 083 heads.

I have 193 heads on my 350 TBI. It makes tons of torque. It gets off the line better than my 91 Z28 350 TPI that I sold a couple months ago but isn't nearly as good on the top end.

Re: which is the better stock head on a stock 350

thanks for the info. and i'm sorry i left out the fact the 350 is stock but it came out of a truck. my camaro originally had a 305 but a crack in the block took care of that one. The heads i have 083 heads came from a Trans-am. I have the whole motor and noticed the engine block # is the same on both 350's. Is there a whole lot of differance between the truck 350 and the TA 350(internal componets)?

Define top end.....

I'm more interested in bottom end torque than high rpm horsepower. So maybe the 193 heads would be a better choice, for me.

Or are they Vortec heads? I know Vortecs are more of a port injection set-up, but the center mounted throttle body throws some people off.

i dont think they are vortec heads. I looked the 193's up on MorTec.com and it only says what i know. they are truck heads 1.94"/1.5" valves 87- up

also, i live in the mountains. i litteraly drive up a mountain to get home everyday. would the 193 be beter for that?

Do a search on 193 heads. There are enough lengthy in-depth discussions about them to keep you occupied for days.

I would run the swirl ports and never look back. For a stock TPI they will work great within the off-idle-4,500 rpm powerband of the TPI.

Yes. We are under the assumption that you are using the stock camshaft. Anything bigger and you probably won't want the swirl ports.

But, as Fast355 said, they are quite a good match match for the low powerband of the TPI system.
