do i need a vacum advance distributer

I just put a 350 in a 85 firebird that originally had a 305 4bbl. I put a performer intake on it and a holley 600. I reused the old distributor from my 305 which i believe is computer controlled. I cannot get this engine to run right we ghave stabbed the distributer 4 times with no luck same thing everytime. It overloads with fuel black smoke when running. Is this because i need to go old school with my distributer? What could be my other problems?

sounds like the floats or your choke on your carb is hanging up. when you installed the distributor, did you make sure it was on top dead center?
did your 305 have tpi or was it a carbed engine?
if you disconnect your vac secondary it should cause the car to stall and not have a good idle, to the best of my knowledge you shouldnt be smoking!

do you know how to put the engine at top dead center? if not, then maybe i can walk you through it. your timing may be off by a tooth because when you installed the distibutor the shaft may have turn just a little bit.
also, make sure the front flap on your carb is all the way open, it may be closing when you start the car and that will cause it to smoke and run like crap.
