Idling problem/ stalling out at stoplights

Idling problem/ stalling out at stoplights
Hey guys
I went to start my 1991 firebird the other day and noticed something odd. It was idling at about 1500 rpm instead of the usual ~500 rpm. I then started driving and now it seems to " stall out" at about every 5 or 6 stoplights. The car while idling will start to kind of " jump forward" and then the rpm goes up and down then it'll shut off and I hafta restart it . could anyone help me identify this problem? My thoughts were taht it could be the timing.
