Here is the deal. I know the alternater and battery are both good because they are both brand new, and I had them tested. The problem is yesturday i turned the car on and after about 30 seconds the alternator kicked in and the battery was getting charged at around 14amps. It only charged for like a min then was flickering back and forth from 12 to 14 for about 15 seconds. Then it stoped and now its on 12 meaning not charging. After that happened i put in a new alternator and it is not charging the battery either. Is there a regulator in the car that tells the alternator when to charge? What is the part called? Any help would be appriciated. Thanks James

Re: Help please alternator not kicking in
This belongs in the electronics department.
You say amps but I figure you mean Volts.
Measure the Volts (key on) on the brown/white wire on the alt. It has to get some voltage there to work.
The actual regulator is inside the alt. and needs an exitation current on that wire.
Even a "new" alt. could be a dud, or intermittent.

Re: Help please alternator not kicking in
yea i bought a new alt once and it wasnt charging and made me think it was something elts but after all i went and had it tested and it was no good.but yea theres a small brown wire that goes to the alt that kicks it on you can put 12 volts to it and it will kick it on but yo0u shouldnt havr to.also a good way to check to see if your alt is charging is to see if its magnetic in the back at the shaft while the car is running.magnetic and its charging not magnetic and its not

So can i just splice into the brown wire on the regulator and put a ignition 12v to it and call it good?

Re: Help please alternator not kicking in
you could but i dont like to do that its more just like a test to see if theres a problem there that wire goes to the gage or light and when the light or gage gets voltage on one side it lights the light or registers the gage and that brown wire is the other side of the 12 v supplie and it kicks the alt on ill try to draw and scann a pic for ya
