Engine disassemble question ( tool related )
ok my uncle is letting me use his shop to pull the engine and tranny out of my truck and freshen it up.
i really wanted to bore it but i just dont have the funds to do it right now.
i was hoping to buy an engine rebuild kit with pistons and buy some 5.7 rods (its a 400cid) and hope like hell my cylinder walls are in ok condition . he is gonna help me clean the heads that are on there and check the bottom end out . change the freeze plugs , and he has an intake and carb for me (edelbrock vector jr and a 750 cfm carb not sure but he said it was on his 69 camaro)
he said i would need to get my own torque wrenches and what ever else i would need
but i dont know what else i need , i still even need the wrenches cause i dont know any one who has anything i could use i got about 400 for tools right now if any one can help me find what i need , please help

I just pulled my engine and rebuilt it. I think I used every tool I own and then some
You will need wrenches, ratchets, extensions, a breaker-bar, torque wrench, oil-pump primer, a harmonic balancer installer & removal tool, etc.
To save some money, you can rent the torque wrench and harmonic balancer tools (and maybe more) from AutoZone. Once you are finished, return the tool and get your money back.
Hope this helps!

Re: Engine disassemble question ( tool related )
I can't find a torque wrench to rent, since it's a precision tool.
buy a click style 3/8" drive one that goes up to 80ft/lbs. That'll do everything.
You can rent a harmonic balancer installer, and you don't need an oil pump priming tool - it's a chevy.
- pick up a piston ring installer and remover tool. Don't buy a gapping tool, you can do that by hand.
- a piston install (clamping sleeve) is needed
- don't pull the rotating assembly until you've used your metal stamp to stamp all the mains and rods, so they go back where they came from.
- cylinder hone (3 stone style)
- feeler gauge pack.
- plastigauge
- electronic dial indicator. 0-8" are about $40 for a cheap offshore one. They work good, they just eat batteries.
- dial indicator and magnetic base. $40 for a cheap chinese set. Works fine.
