Stock exhaust question

Ok so i've got two camaro's.
The one in question is being restored to stock and i'm practically done. only thing left to do is hook the exhaust up to the manifolds.

My question is: i know that they join like a y pipe but when they're being attatched to the manifold i can't for the life of me figure out how it goes. i know there's like a spacer that goes into it but other than that i'm lost it's been so long since i've hooked up a stock exhaust.

this is on a 85 IROC 305 tpi.
does anybody have a diagram of how the stock exhaust pipe bolts to the manifold or maybe even a few pictures. please help me.

did that model have the exhaust flap thingy on the right side or was that only carbed cars that had it.....if it was on the TPI than that could be a missing link

if by exhaust flap thingy you mean the spacer that goes in between the pipe and the manifold than yes it has it and no it's not missing.

still need some help.

one more question to add. my buddy removed his power steering pump and just looped the hose, he says it's perfectly fine that way he's never had any trouble. is that the case, cause we just did it to mine.

EFE valve, carbed. Cincy, I'm not sure why you're having problems. It's a simple bolt-up, Y-pipe to exhaust manifolds.

Re: Stock exhaust question

The "spacer" goes on the pass. side exhaust manifold outlet with the flat side up towards the manifold (no gasket- metal-to-metal) and the y-pipe retains it in place like a sandwich when you tighten the nuts on the studs.

The outlet on the driver's side manifold and the bottom of the spacer on the passenger side that contacts the y-pipe are both flanged to match the flare on the top of each y-pipe down-tube, so there is a small amount of play to allow you to get the angle of the y-pipe correct under the car. It also means there are no gaskets anywhere in the system. Everything is metal-to-metal.

Not sure if that helps becuase I'm not sure why you are having a problem with this.

Maybe he's used to long tube headers.

Re: Stock exhaust question

I also thought I'd add that the high performance and low performance exhaust manifolds each use a different matching y-pipe.

Your 85 TPI should have the high performance manifolds with 2-1/4" outlets. Low performance manifolds (used on low output LG4 carb engines and later 305 TBI engines) have smaller 2" outlets and the location and angle of the outlet on the passenger manifold is slightly different, although you would be hard pressed to see the difference just looking at it casually. Andf, of course, they are different diameters. As such, you can't bolt a low performance 2" y-pipe to high performance 2-1/4" manifolds, or vice versa.

actually that one guy hit the nail on the head i'm used to long tube headers to down piped 4 bolts and done.

the thing that confuses me and might I add thank you very much that should help a bit. Back to what i was saying though is that it's almost like the bolts aren't long enough to go onto now when it came apart there extra bolts with it i thought that the bolts already on the manifold would be the ones i use. but for some reason i have two extra bolts that came out of it so i'm still at a loss i'm not gettin into until tomorrow. but idk i'll take a picture tomorrow if i can't figure it out. until then if anybody has a picture of a stock manifold it'd be so lovely.
