Engines

I'm looking to buy a Camaro and I'm not sure which engine will give me the most power. I'm thinking a 350 would give me the most right?

Re: Engines

Most power, not a chance. Most power that can be commonly found and not really expensive, many people would agree with that.

Are you looking to replace the engine, or want to know which of the stock engines from what years made the most power?

Re: Engines

That's what I figured. I was also thinking of getting one with a V6. Are those very good? Can much be done to them to make them faster?

Re: Engines

Kind of weak in my opinion. V8 will hold up better. Nothing wrong with a 305, you can upgrade later.

Re: Engines

those 305's are a pretty good balance imo and parts for em' are everywhere. makes a 350 swap in super easy too (aside from having to jump on the motor praying that A-it doesn't by some random act of nature come loose from the hoist and bust something up B-you don't slip off the motor because your dumbass came up with the smart idea to jump on it to wedge her in from the start). I just wish I knew how to wire in that new ecm harness.

Re: Engines

Oh well the reason I'm asking about a V6 is because the Grand National had one and it was pretty badass. So I was just wondering if the Camaro's V6 was anything like that.

Re: Engines

Lol, correct me if i'm wrong but i'm pretty sure those were turbo charged, I don't think many if any thirdgens had something like that. Though i've seen some pictures of someone on here before that posted some rare firebird/transam F body that had a turbo charged v6.

And the grand national had such a short life on the market because it was faster than the corvette at the time (once again correct me if my facts are wrong) and GM didn't like that very much, so they didn't let it last for long.

Think about it, you shelled all that money out for your big bad corvette only to be outrun by a buick grand national that had a v6 in it.

But you're speaking as if they're plentiful, you're way off, better to stick to this general rule of thumb "there's no replacement for displacement"

Re: Engines

The 89 Turbo Trans Am was the only V6 thirdgen with great performance in stock form. It was a 1-year only engine offering, as you couldn't get the 3.8L Turbo, let alone a 3.8L V6, in any other thirdgen. 1,555 were made, so it is a pretty rare and desirable car.

The standard V6s (2.8L, 3.1L) are nothing to brag about performance-wise in stock form. You are much better off getting a V8. Much easier to convert down the road if you want more performance.

That being said, anyone willing to spend some money can turn the V6s into pretty damn fast machines. But if you want to drop in an engine and go and not do any serious mods, and have decent performance, get a V8.

Re: Engines

Find a car with a 350. The bigger the better as stated before.

Since most people here are on a budget it's the motor of choice. In general, it will respond better to mods than anything else.
