Adjustable vacuum can?
i have a zz4350 that i have been trying to tune and im running into some issues
they way i went about setting the timing is i reved the motor to 3000 rpms and set it to 36 degress (vacuum line plugged) and when i let off the gas it settled at 16. the car seems to like it but... at wot and 5000rpms it pings. it has the crane adjustable vacuum can and it's turned all the way clockwise im not sure how to use it lolol so i left it alone.
could it be reving past 36 degress above 3000rpms and that would cause the pinging?

Re: Adjustable vacuum can?
at WOT, your vacuum level will be zero, so your vacuum can won't be adding any advance.
Your springs could be very stiff, and still be adding more advance past 3000 RPM.
I doubt that though, since you say 16* at idle, means it's adding 20* mech advance, which sounds correct.
Obvious fix - Back off a few degrees of timing.
Also, look up the instructions for the crane cam. I think you can pull it off summits website, I know I have found it online before.

Re: Adjustable vacuum can?
Thats an interesting issue that has been talked about more often lately.
It turns out that a lot of motors like a lot of advance (it looks like up to around HP peak) but then at a certain point on the tach will ping.
With traditionla ignitions the only option was to either limmit total advance to what the motor could tolorate at any RPM.
With modern computer controls you can program an advance curve that looks more like a sine wave rather than the more linear curves your used to.
That can make a real difference in drivability, mileage and your average output through out the useable portion of the RPM range.
Removing enough advance to keep the motor happy through the upper part of the range will make for your best 1/4 mile times but you will be sacrificing some low-mid range torque, maybe enough to notice.
