Thinking of boring out my engine.

I have a 91 rs camaro. 305 5 liter throttle body, and im looking for a way to up my horse power. What else would you recommend beside boring it out. What size would you bore it and where about or who would i take it to.

Thanks,

If it doesn't need a bore, don't bore it. You don't bore an engine for power gains. You bore an engine for maintenance. You won't get any appreciable power gains from an overbore.

Who would you go to, to get it bored out? Also you think bore it to a 350 then switch out the crank and everything

Re: Thinking of boring out my engine.

A 350 and 305 use the same crank, you need a new block and pistons if you want a 350. You could never bore a 305 enough to give it a 4.00" bore.

Engines used to be bored out for power, but that was back when cylinder walls were so thick that you could bore them out as much as 1/8" (which would actually turn a 305 into a 350...), but now the most you would ever want to overbore an engine is .060".

Edit: You can take a block to most auto parts stores and they'll send it to their machine shop to bore it, or you can take it to any automotive machine shop.

Good luck trying to bore through those water jackets trying to bump it from 5.0 to 5.7 liters.

I believe the maximum you can bore the 305 cylinder walls is like 335 or something like that.

I agree A 350 swap be the best bang for the buck.

I disagree, he could just put a big shot of nitrous on his 305.

Re: Thinking of boring out my engine.

That's only true if you can get the bottle refilled for free every time. For the rest of us, who can't get free nitrous refills, the 350 is still the best bet.

Yeah... i was being sarcastic, which is what that: was supposed to imply. I do agree, if he's gonna rebuild an engine and wants performance, more cubes is the way to go.

Re: Thinking of boring out my engine.

Like someone else stated, you don't bore out the cylinders for power, you do it because it NEEDS it when you're rebuilding a motor. If you were to tear apart your motor for the specific reason of boring it out for more power then please...go buy a Hon-duh.
