Weird hot start issue. Sorry its long_HELP!!

Hey guys, first let me say I searched, and didnt find the same conditions. Today my firebird gave me its first issue while driving. I had went to get something to eat. I turned it off so they could hear me at the drive thru. Started it, pulled around to the window, turned it off. I paid, they asked me to pull ahead and wait for something to finish cooking. I started it, pulled forward, turned it off. They brought food maybe 4 minutes later. I started it, drove off and about 2 minutes later, got caught by a train. It was just starting thru, so I turned the car off. Waited till the train ran thru, about 6-7 mins. Went to start the car, and it wouldnt start! It would crank over but wouldnt start. I pushed it over to a parking lot and checked the fuse for the fuel pump-fine, checked for power at the relay, and ecm pin 1. Both were good. took the breather cover off and had some body turn the key while I watched the injectors. I got nothing from the injectors. So at this point I am thinking the fuel pump is shot. I check ALL fuse under the dash, all good. I tried starting it a couple of times in the middle of all this, no start. So I call a tow truck, andf wait a couple of minutes. Then I tried starting it again. It started! Now what in the world does this sound like to you guys?

Almost sounds like your ignition module suffered from heat soak and stopped working.

Remove the distributor cap to gain access to the module, then remove it from the distributor and take it to your local auto parts store. I know autozone can test them. The problem you may have is that the module has to be hot for it to start failing, and most of the time it won't be that hot on a tester, which can give a false pass on the test.

Hope that helps.

Actually it makes sense. In a ten minute period it was started and stopped 4 times, and the car had been run for about an hour before anyway. Well tomorrow I am going to try and change the fuel filter since I have no idea of its condition, and I will investigate the ignition module as well. I think I should also check the fuel pressure as well. What is the best way to do this on these cars? And thank you very much for the opinion.

If memory serves, the VATS systems on the 90-92 model years disabled the starter relay, meaning a no-cranking issue would be present. I had both of these problems at once, and it drove me nuts.

As far as checking the fuel pressure on the L03 setups, I don't believe there is a Schrader valve or something comparable on the fuel lines like the TPI fuel rail. I'm sure a search of the TBI board would yield a method of determining it, as I don't have much experience with the TBI cars. Good luck and hope you get it figured out.
