99 vortec 350 engine potential

hi
i live in ISRAEL, so consider this as helpin the israelis..
i have a 5.7 tpi instaled on a 1982 ford cortina (2300 lbs car).
it runs great, only i have the oportunity to sell the engine and buy a brand new 5.7 1999 long block vortec in a crate, with a "marine aplication" tag on the box.
i want more power than i have now with a stock tpi.
what will be the best - but kinda budget way to do this?
thanks
in advance.
sefi

I love your name, as it is our acronym for Sequential Electronic Fuel Injection. Before we can suggest anything, is it safe to assume that noone cares about whether you have emissions controls? Assuming you can run anything you like, but assuming you have nothing like our automotive machine shops, I suggest you plan on spending about $300 U.S. for a custom cam, plus gaskets and shipping, while I'll post specs for tomorrow, and you'll need to determine your next fuel system. If your engine includes the EFI, then you may want to keep that rather than converting to a carburetor, but I'd suggest going carbureted. I suggest the Edelbrock Performer RPM AirGap Vortec intake manifold, and a Holley Street Avenger 670 carburetor. You can find them on www.summitracing.com

Re: 99 vortec 350 engine potential

hi
i do have a 70 conv` mustang with the SEFI engine.
i just bought a 351 w F4TE to build a stroker for the stang.

about the vortc - its a long block without intake.
it is new in the box - looks like navy leftovers, althow it says "marine aplication".
let say i`ll go carb with cam and headers - how much FWHP can i make?
it is attached to a rebuilt van 700R4 and a locked dana 60 .
by the way, if i`ll stroker the engine - will i need to swap the heads?

There's no point in stroking it, you'll never hook it up in a car that light. If you do cam, Street Avenger 670 on RPM AirGap, and headers, through a 700R-4, you're looking at about 313 rwhp. And 428 ft-kbs of torque at the crankshaft. If that's not enough, you better plan on some even better heads. Those heads can be used on a stroker, but you'll just be making the same 313 rwhp at a lower engine rpm. Patriot is selling 185cc aluminum heads, new, for $575/pr bare, figure another $80 for valves and $26 for a set of valvesprings, then $15 for seals.

If you can't get the new vortec heads machined to accomodate more lift, and for the intakes there's really no point, then here's what to do for a cam: Order a Lunati 50143. It'll give you amazing torque from 2400 through 5800, and it'll work with that new engine with no machine work required.

I have a vortec 350 with .560 lift without machining my heads! The answer to this is by using a stepped retainer. I have a machinest up here in alaska that figured out this combination. It is fairly simple. I will poste part numbers later when i get them from machinest!
