Bench Testing Rebuilt engine

I am finishing rebuilding a TPI engine. I would like to "Start it up" on a bench before installing it into the car.

I am 57 years old and in years past, when cars had carburetors and distributors, this was not difficult, but I fear this may be difficult, because of the ECM, fuel injection (Pressurized fuel pump in gas tank) etc.

Does anybody have any experience doing this?

Is there a straightforward way of doing it?

If you build a decicated stand, but I think it'd be easier to r&r the engine 3 times than buy an extra fuel pump, fuel lines, and transfer over the wiring harness, battery, computer, radiator with fan and hoses, et cetera.

I agree. I've done this with my carbed engine, and i've customized a stand for it, but for an FI engine it's MUCH harder. I'd just stick it in the car and hope for the best

There is no reason you can't start it with a conventional carb and hei dist, you'll just have to swap the intake and rig up some way to get fuel to the carb.

You don't even have to put mount bolts in the center two intake bolt holes if you don't want to. Since they're at a different angle (most likely) than the old-school carb intakes, that's one hassle it doesn't make sense to go through just for a short test.

Re: Bench Testing Rebuilt engine

Thank you

As usual, I get a lot of wisdom from the experience of the members of this board.

I guess I'll have to install it and hope I don't have to remove it for some stupid mistake.

Aint progress great.

Regards,

George
