does anyone know what is the advance wire??? i took my car to a mechanic and was told to fix that, the mechanic told is a wire that hooks uo tot he distribuator. it s a light brown wire that runs along the passenger side and was told that hooks up to the distribuator.

 

Often referred to as the "EST" or "ESC" wire. It's what sends the signal to the computer from the distributor so the computer can make timing decisions. It's a tan wire with a connector in the area of the heater/AC box.

 

if this would not be working what would be happenig to my car??? i followed the cable and its connected right behind the distribuator it conects to a thing that kind of looks like a gasonline filter but it has a wire plug is this the one???

In my book to set the timing it states:
Disconnect SET TIMING connector (tan/black wire) located in harness close to distributor. DO NOT disconnect 4 wire connector at distributor.

Distributor 4-pin connector:

1. EST; Pin D
2. Distributor reference; Pin C
3. Bypass; Pin B
4. Distributor ground; Pin A

All 4 wires connect to the ECM.
The Bypass is the only wire that has a quick disconnect which is the SET TIMING connector mentioned above.

But, the connector itself is where Five7kid said.

The ESC module should never be disconnected to set the timing.

 

That sounds like the oil pressure gauge sending unit.

is these the same wire??? when i disconect the one by the AC my car runs alright but when it is connecte it wont rev more than 2500 and sometimes turn off they told me it was the advance but i really dont know what that is or how to fix it

 

The first wire is the one you disconnect to set the timing.

The second one is the oil pressure gauge sending unit.

They are not the same thing.

As pictured, the advance wire is not fully engaged. You should get an SES light if the engine is run without the wire connected. It looks like the connector clip is broken, perhaps that's what the mechanic thought should be fixed.

If not connected, the engine will run but you won't get proper timing advance. Power will be down.

Do you know where the timing is set at? Do you know if it was set properly? If the timing was set with the wire connected, you wouldn't have enough advance. The engine might idle, but it wouldn't have any power.

 

so if i were to fix the timeing i would 1st disconect the advance wire and set the timimg right, then connect the wire back on right????

Why does my car run well without the advance wire connected??? if i do connect the wire the engine wont rev, for example if i connect it and put my car on D when i start driving the engine will rev only to about ~2000 even if i floor the gas. and when in P if i accelarate it will rev up to about
~5500+ but sort of startle

After you set base timing, turn the car off and disconnect the negative battery cable and plug that cable back in. When the ECM resets it might fix whatever it is you';re dealing with.

 

Most likely your timing isn't set properly.

Disconnect that tan/black stripe wire. Start the engine. With the engine at idle, set the timing with a timing light to where the timing is supposed to be. Shut off the engine. Reconnect the wire.
