Issues when revving the engine
Hey all,
When I start up my engine from cold, it usually idles at between 600 and 750 RPM. I've gotten into the habit of letting it warm up for about a minute before moving it from place to place (currently not in a drivable state). Sometimes I gun the engine to about 2000 RPM and when it starts to settle back down, with no pressure on the throttle, it will idle at around 1500 RPM and slowly decrease to around 1250 RPM. Revving the engine a second time will settle it back down to "normal" idling speeds.
Also, sometimes when I rev the engine, it makes a "sucking" sound and dies until I release the throttle, where it revs itself back up to idle. If I rev it again it will be fine. If I try to rev it again, it does the whole suck/die thing again. Pretend that this is independent of my last question, since I could see how it could conflict, but I hope these are two separate problems.
And finally, regarding rough idling, I tried spraying a little bit of quick start around my intake manifold and watching for increasing RPM (assuming there is a gasket leak), but nothing came up. I've done a billion different searches and everything is pointing me to a problem with the EGR valve. Correct me if I'm wrong, but on a 5.0L Chevy this is on the left side of the intake manifold (facing into the bay from the front) beside the carb. The problem is that I've removed the EGR valve (therefore it can't malfunction), cut out a template from 1/8" steel, cut out a gasket to match, and bolted it down to where the EGR valve would be. I have yet to try spraying anything around the replaced valve. Is this really the last thing that could really be wrong with any vacuum leaks?
It's a 5.0L Chevy with Edelbrock 1406 carb. As far as I know, the carb is in working order and everything is connected/bolted down to specifications.
Suggestions? I have the day off so I can run out to the car and test.
Cheers.
PS - Bonus question: At a certain RPM (usually after I put it in drive, so around 500) it sounds like something in the dash is "buzzing". What could be making that noise? I'd love to just rip it out, but if the buzzer is really important than I suppose I can live with it. I just don't know what it is and it's really irritating!
