timing help

ok so looking through here i have found that 36 degrees advance with the rpm's up is good. how up does that mean exactly though? i have put a cam in my car and it runs but i set the idle advance as well as i could between 6 and 10 degs. however i did that with the vacume hooked up to my accell distr. so unhook the vacume and just go to 36 degs advance no matter what rpm that is or what?

Re: timing help

As long as it's high enough that the distributor is fully advanced, you're good.

Re: timing help

advancing the timing also will jump up your idle speed.
as you advance it, adjust your idle screw on your carb at the same time.

Re: timing help

Without the vacuum line disconnected, hold the revs around 4000 or more to assure all of the mechanical advance is in and set it at 34-38 degrees. Put the vacuum line back on and adjust the idle screw on the throttle.
