Recently purchased a Stock Set of GM Valve Covers for GM 305 Engine.
They are in good shape, but need a Restoration.

My goal is to match the Original Low Gloss Black Valve covers like the Factory

Paint vs Powdercoat

If Paint, does it need to be High Heat Paint or can someone recommend a good paint to use. My Body Shop would be painting them.

If powdercoat is the way to go, I would need a recommended shop to send them to.

FYI: dave mc is a good source for firebird parts, purchased some parts from him and they have been on the money.

 

Any good paint should work fine, the valve covers don't see that much heat.

 

what you need is duplicolor flat or semigloss 700* or 1000* ceramic enamel. it looks really good once its done, as with all paints follow the recoating instructions.

 

Well at the GM Nationals in Carlisle PA, I got mixed reviews on weather to Paint the valve covers or powdercoat them. Some of the TA's, Camaro's and GTO's guys painted while other powedercoated them.

I was told that the Powdercoat is much more duarble and will not scratch as easily as with painted valve covers. Plus they will last alot longer than paint.

While at Carlisle, I spoke with T.J Powdercoaters, Inc. in Binghamton, NY. He had alot of Powdercoated Valve covers on display, they looked really nice. He said he can match the original color as well. Price was about $70 bucks for both covers.

Both Crank Case and PVC Valve Cover Grommets are still available from GM, so thats one less item to worry about.

Anyone recommend Powdercoating or T.J Powdercoaters, Inc. in Binghamton, NY. I am kinda of leaning towards the Powdercoating
