Which vortec head?

I have an opportunity to buy a complete vortec 5.7 engine but before i do im hoping you guys can help me identify the heads.

The heads on this engine have one single bump on the front, similar to the old fuelie heads. The only vortec heads i have ever seen have either 3 humps or no humps on the end. Are the heads identifiable by this hump?

The engine is 2 hours from me so i dont really want to waste the gas if i dont have to and the guy doesnt want to crack the valve covers loose to give a casting number.

Any help is greatly appriciated, as usual

ok they are 906 heads.... i read that they are far inferior to 062 heads.

Anyone have experience with these?

Not personally, but the word is the magazine that made the "inferior" assertion later retracted it.

Re: Which vortec head?

before you do, pull the heads and make sure they aren't cracked between the 2 middle combustion chambers. This is the common failure for these engines. The '96 heads didn't flow as well, because of the 70 degree cut under the 45 degree cut, so those heads are junk. But 906s are equal to 062s on the SuperFlow 1020 flow bench.
