350 performance part suggestions

iv got a carbed 350 and its producing no power and i realize now that i need to pull the motor and put some performance parts in it. im going to enjoy the car for the summer so im wondering wats the best bolt on heads i can get for under 1g cause iv got the edelbrock performer intake and the holley 600 cfm modified with the choke beveled off. im thinking a good coil and some good spark plug cables but i just cant decide wat would be best.

for later reference wat is a good set of cams to complement those heads. and wat is some good parts to stick into the motor for under 2gs after i pull the motor back out

Re: 350 performance part suggestions

Intake and heads are really the best thing you can do for these motors. After that, exhaust. GM really choked the 350s during the 80's. For heads, if you've got 1g to spend, look at some aluminum heads from AFR. Then I'd look at headers. There's really no need to gut the motor if there's nothing wrong with it. Unless you're going to raise the compression ratio, or stroke it, it should be fine for now. On a side note, make sure that when you look for heads that say 1986 and down so that they will work with your current intake. They changed the intake bolt angle in '87.

Re: 350 performance part suggestions

Find a deal on some decent aluminum heads if you can, rhs, afr etc. Also if you don't mind iron heads and a manifold swap, alot of people are having good success with vortec heads (edelbrock also makes an aluminum version), and they're cheap, the downside is they'll require a vortect specific intake manifold (should be able to get both under your budget for sure). They're one of the better all around street heads if you don't mind a manifold swap while you're doing the heads.

Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

Re: 350 performance part suggestions

well the guy that sold me the carb says that hes got some 64 cc camel hump and i think its a 441x head but he says that he could get ahold of some 64 cc aluminum heads fully assembled for 650 so i think ill take those instead cause the camel humps just seem to be more than i need but i havent decided on the headers but he says hes got some that would work with the aluminums

i think im going to stay with the edelbrock intake but i just cant get the aircleaner to fit under the hood with the intake and carb because the carb has like a 1" clearance

Re: 350 performance part suggestions

do a search on here for drop base air cleaner, I haven't used one but several people on here do to get clearance with taller than stock intakes.

Pontiacs have less hood clearance than the camaro's do however.

Re: 350 performance part suggestions

well a little update. i havent gotten the heads, headers or the cams but i put on the holley and wen i drove it and tried the 0-60 the car did it in
15 sec so i was a little unimpressed but i toke it back to the guy and he had some softer springs that would open all the barrels at 2500 rpms versus 3500 and a different squirter so we put them in it and we gave it a run. the car gained a mile just by doing that cause now the car does
0-60 in under 10 sec but it wasnt official cause we only did it with a stopwatch. thats pretty good in my book for a stock motor minus the performance intake and carb. im now thinking of putting in a edlebrock performer RPM intake with the other mods but il need to modify my hood since the carb only gives a 1/2 in clearance and with a different intake it will sit higher.

For the record a SBC only has ONE cam. A performer rpm will fit under a stock hood with the right drop base air cleaner/filter combo, its been done many times. This post is under the wrong section..
