Sticky Lifters?

Hi guys,
My new ride (86 with a 2.8) has lots of annoying noises coming from the engine compartment. But I need help with one. In putting my ear next to various things I'm hearing a lot of chatter from the valve covers. I can''t here it over the other noises (mostly belt noise, most are too loose just didn't have time to fix them this morning) unless I'm close to the valve covers. I'm thinking the lifters are sticking but I've also heard that the fuel injectors opening and closing can make noise too. I checked the oil level and it's fine, if it is the lifters, am I looking at a new oil pump? I'm having my mechanic replace the rear main seal and front tranny seal later this weak so I'd rather have it done at the same time. So am I in the right direction or am I crazy

Alex
