wtf??? liquid comming out of gauge? help

we cut what we thought was a wire going to our temp gauge cluster (aftermarket) and wen we went to splice it back thinking it was a wire and it started squirting out what smells like free-on. ive never seen anything like this before. can anyone explain? do we need to replace the whole "cable" or can we unkink it and put in into the gauge?

Re: wtf??? liquid comming out of gauge? help

its a temp gauge wouldnt that mean that it goes somewhere towards the radiator? its not my car its a friends 85 iroc. we were switching his a pillar 2 gauge cluster to a 3 gauge cluster and to get the gauge out of the hole we had to cut the "wire".ive always thought that the temp gauge was read there a wire not a lil pipe. ill be going back over there either today or tomorrow and i will trace the "wire" to where ever it may lead. ill try to take pics and see what happends.

i know someone who had a similar problem, he had to plug his with his thumb til he got home. ask 6six6, he may be able to help you. i don't know personally why theres liquid in there, maybe its a better conductor, makes the guages more accurate but then why would it be under pressure? google time!

Re: wtf??? liquid comming out of gauge? help

are you sure you cut the temp wire? Correct me if Im wrong but i believe that the older models had the oil gauge connected with an actual hose which measured the pressure in that fasion. It was old school. Now a dayz the oil pressure is measured electrically.

Re: wtf??? liquid comming out of gauge? help

yeah, if it is switched to a mechanical gauge like I did, it has an actual tube going to an oil port, from which the gauge reads the actual oil pressure.

It may be a capillary type of sensor. There is a fluid or a gas which expands with temperature rise and contracts with temperature drop. this change in volume or pressure moves the needle on the gauge. Once that pressure is gone in the tube, the gauge is useless.

Re: wtf??? liquid comming out of gauge? help

we are just going to get a new gauge and reinstall it . and its a temp gauge, the line we cut went into the manifold at the waterneck had nothing to do with oil pressure. we have another gauge for that. thanks for the help tho
