Head Help

Okay, I need to buy heads and the more I research the more I get confused. What I have is a 1989 L98 out of a Trans Am GTA that has been bored .040 and is newly rebuilt. The block has not been decked to my knowledge. I am going to run an Eagle cast rotating assembly with hyperpuretic pistons with valve reliefs (-5CC). I have the Accel high flow intake and runners and ported the plenum. I will run a stock thottle body. I have the Hooker 2055's and y-pipe which will be used in the exhaust. I will buy whatever cam that I need. The car will not have any emmissions.

I am looking at Trick Flow

AFR 1040's

Trick Flow G1 Twisted Wedge Heads

L98 Aluminum Corvette Heads

My goal is to have a fun and FAST weekend warrior!

Any opinions or help would be greatly appreciated! I have to buy heads by Monday to get my 4-year restoration done.

Thanks!

you didn,t mention if its a 355 or 383 but since you didnt Id assume its a 350 stroke engine, lets look at the choices

the corvette aluminum heads SUCK in stock condition they barely flow 210cfm
the trickflows can be nice heads but require extensive port work (THATS WHAT IM RUNNING) but they are an older design, and I would NOT be running them if the BRODIX or AFR heads were available when I bought those heads 12 years ago
the AFR heads are the best you listed,
the 195cc AFR or 200cc brodix heads will be a good choice, but to get full potential from either heads youll need to match the compression cam duration and lift and your rear gear ratio and if its an auto transmission your stall speed on the converter, with that intake that means a 3.73-3.90 rear gear and a cam in the 230-236 intake duration range, with a 3000 rpm stall converter, and probably 32-36 lb injectors to keep up with the increased air flow and some custom tuning

Re: Head Help

It is just a 355 with standard stroke.

Yeah I figured the AFR's were the best but read some conflicting information about campatibility with TPI. Do you think the 180's or 195's would be better. Will the stock equipment bolt up fine?

Another question would be how high of a compression ratio would be safe and would the LT4 Hotcam be a good choice?

I have 3.23 gears in the rear and a B&M 2,800 stall converter.

I could always go with some high quality ProComp's! LOL

Thanks Again for the help!

Re: Head Help

Judging by what you said above, the 195's may be a little too big and I may need to go with the AFR 180's to match my 3.23 year.

Re: Head Help

the 180cc heads are a great choice and a dirrect fit, the 195 cc can be made to fit, the 180cc afr are the better choice with that stall and rear gear, and Id drop the cam duration to match to something in the 220-225 duration range to match and suggest 1.6:1 roller rockers

Re: Head Help

Thanks so much! I will go ahead and order the 180's with L98 angle plug! Whew, I will be so glad to get this thign running again. I have not driven it in 8 years and have been restoring it for the last 4. I want to get it to the Trans Am Nationals at the end of August.
