Re: Setting timing

The msd 6al box should have no affect on how you set you timing....it does not controll timing itself. Set timing the same way you would always set it normally. If it's moving back then something else is doing it....like you distributor is turning slowly while engine running....

Re: Setting timing

okay, and when it's running and you unplug that (brown I think) connector , the check engine light comes on???
Maybe try a different timing gun, or you have something else wrong.
It's just a MSD 6al box, correct?? nothing else with it?? no timing adjusters?? (shouldn't naturally aspirated)
The MSD stands for Multiple Spark Discharge.....it just sparks the plug multiple times, but you shouldn't see that on the timing...the MSD should not have anything at all to do with timing....that is the distributor's job....is it a stock distributor?? I think you have something else goin on....

MSD doesn't change the timing. It sounds more like you didn't disconnect the correct wire for the EST. If you're watching your timing on the damper at idle, then disconnect the EST you should see your spark advance drop and not move any more unless you turn your distributor.

If this isn't the case and something else is wrong then you may want to pull your distributor and inspect it closely for problems.
