91 RS knocking on drivers side?

Hey guys,

I did a few searches on the site but I want to throw in my situation. (Sorry if this is asked a lot or if its in the wrong section)

I just bought my first car and its a 91 RS 305 TBI from our trusted mechanic. While driving it home today I heard a knocking noise coming from the drivers side of the engine. When I turn the car on it seems fine, but when I put it in Drive it begins to knock. It continues knocking until I give it some gas and I get moving. Sometimes it knocks when Im idling at a stop as well. It seems whenever I come to a stop and go, it starts knocking for a bit then goes away.

When I place my left foot to the left of the brake, I can feel the knocking. So im assuming its near the firewall?

Im taking it out to school tomorrow and hopefully it can make it back. I'll definitely be taking a good look under the hood tomorrow. Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated

Might be somthing simple like a broken exh hanger or as extreem as a rod. hard to say. I suggest getting under the car and looking for loose components or take it back to the mechanic and get it checked out.

Im going to have a friend bring a jack over so we can look under it. What places should I look for anything loose? Im not too familiar with working on cars, but i did take a class in auto tech.

If its rod knock im going to shoot myself. I worked really hard to get the money for it. When we test drove it there wasn't any knocking. Thanks for the reply

Re: 91 RS knocking on drivers side?

Well I saw the mechanic today and asked about it. He said hes never heard the noise before when he had it :/

Theres a few things that come to mind. The gas in the tank is old. I put in about 20 bucks of regular gas yesterday. Could it be bad gas making that noise?
I noticed that sometimes the gas pedal feels stiff and requires more push to get moving.

My dads friend took a look at it today and said it might be the lifters. He mentioned that I should go to Napa and ask about an additive to soften the noise.

The knocking only happened today when I came to a stop. When I take the pressure off the brake the knocking stops.
