84 T/A with 350 starts/drives but doesn't stay running at idle
Hey guys,
Thanks for all the help getting the car started again!...now it just won't stay running without my foot on the gas.
Decided to start a new thread for the new problem. Search didn't quite provide what I was looking for so here I am. Quick background...
1984 Pontiac Trans Am. Last year I installed a new 350, bored .040, new edelbrock intake, World Sportsman II heads, 3" catback, hooker 2055 emissions legal shorties, newish (2 years old then) CC Qjet from Jet performance products. I have a 700R4 with the stock torque converter.
I can't keep the car running. I fires up and sounds good and will drive, but as soon as I let my foot off the gas it idles down and dies. Yesterday it would idle for 2-5 minutes before dying. Now it just drops off and dies. This is in park...not even putting a load on the motor. I even cranked the idle screw in several times each time I started it but nothing...even when the screw is turned all the way in. Is there anything you guys can think of that would cause this?
Some things I've been told,
--Possibly the Torque converter has gone bad/need to upgrade to higher stall (but problem is even when in park?)
--Possibly needs a new EGR valve
--Dump the Qjet and go holly (need emissions stuff on car so can't do that)
--Go back to old carb (I have my old carb, only thinkg I would have to change is the secondaries out of the new carb into the old)
Funny thing is, before I started havin the non-starting issue (bad plugs, plug wires, lack of fuel to motor), it ran relatively good (well enough for a Dyno Shop to dyno it and say it was running good, even the Air/Fuel mixture was near perfect) and the only time it would stall out is when driving and slowing down and stopping at a stop light (which led to the Torque Converter theory)
Any and all help would be appreciated. Thanks!
