Timing Light

Okay, heres the story. A month ago I decided to pull the distributor off of my 88 camaro and install another one to see if it was the problem. What i didnt do is mark where the rotor was pointed at. So now what im gonna do is do what the manual says and put the engine at TDC and have the rotor pointing at the #1 cylinder. Now my question is i wanna check the timing on my vehicle (If I get it running) after I install the distributor, but the thing is I never used a timing light before. I noticed some of the guys disconnect the brown and black wire by the firewall? Anyways I need some pointers to see if I can get this right. Thanks!

Re: Timing Light

Here's the tech article on setting the timing.

Also, here is a picture of the EST bypass connector (the thing that has to be unhooked when setting base timing):

(Pic borrowed from LT1 Cam Digest)

Note: The exact location of your EST connector may vary slightly from the picture depending on how your wiring harness is routed, but it should definitely be around back of the strut tower/blower box area. Also, it may be completely enclosed in the wire loom, so you might have to dig around a bit for it.

Hope that helps. Good luck.
