Oil pressure sending unit
I have an 87 firebird that originally came with a 305 tpi with an oil pressure guage on the dash. I have swapped out the engine to a 350 and installed a new sending unit that I got from autozone. I have only a few hours on the motor and the guage is stuck at 30 psi even with the key off. A buddy of mine told me to not to get the autozone ones because they suck. Was just wondering where you guys get your oil pressure sending units.... and if anyone has had trouble with theres as well. Mine is the small canister one next to the distributor not the one next to the oil filter. Thanks for the help!

Re: Oil pressure sending unit
the sending unit isnt the prob i dont think then. it could be the gauge. they sending units are the same with the 305 and 350... as long as its a 60psi gauge on the instrament panel then u get the right sending unit.
i kno the one ur talking about i have 2 of them and i had my stewart warner 100psi plugged in there for a yr or so.
take the plug off the sender by the distributer (the one that plugs onto the oil pressure sender) and ground it ( to a good ground) and have someone look at the gauge. when it is unplugged the needle on the gauge should be beyond 60psi... grounded and it should move to 0psi. i might have that backwards but either way the needle should move (with the key to the on position or engine running) if the needle on the gauge doesnt move then its the actual gauge in the cluster and not the sending unit.
i get mine from anywhere, napa, my parts dealer who usually gets standard motor products, or ACdelco.
if its stuck at 30psi with the engine off then ur gauge is bad... simple.

Re: Oil pressure sending unit
when im driving around looking for the chicks. my oil pressure gauge is high. is that bad.?
my great grandfather bought a brand new bel air off the chevy lot. drove like 5 miles and the engine seized. he said the pressure gauge was 0. he didnt think much of it cause it was brand new. turned out. it didnt have any oil in it. what a waste. he got another one though free replacement.

Re: Oil pressure sending unit
no thats normal... which is why i had to get a 100psi one lol
steps
1.) check for full oil on level ground with engine off and let it sit a min
2.) take sender wire off sender and look at gauge while engines running (look for peak or 0 reading that diff then when plugged in)
3.) if nothing changes with sender wire disconnected, change out gauge in cluster
4.) if gauge changes with wire disconnected than when engines running and the wires connected then its your sender.
you could skip all this and replace the sender and gauge and hope u fixed the prob. just use standard motor products or ACdelco brand.
