Rebuild Kit
I'm a couple of weeks away from pulling my engine and rebuilding it, and im wondering where i can get a rebuild kit for cheap, so far i went to a local machine shop and the guy said it would be 1,300 for the rebuild and i would have to install it back in the car, he also would sell me the kit for me to rebuild it for $650 but he said it was all excellent brand name parts, i went on summit and found a federal mogul kit for 450, and an enginetech kit for 300 from another place, I was wondering which one i should go with or if anyone knows were i can get a good, less expensive kit? oh and the machine shop is charging 200 for their work in cleaning up the block and all them other stuff, does that sound about right? by the way i got an 88 350 tpi.

Re: Rebuild Kit
$200 depends on what they're doing...
If you've got a good block and the deck is flat and mains are all within tolerances... then all they really have to do is bore it out.
get a kit to match the bore.
I would personally just piece together my own "rebuild kit". Fel-pro gaskets, Summit main/rod bearings (They're King brand which are good), Speed Pro moly rings... Shouldn't be too expensive.
I dont trust that EngineTech stuff.

yeah enginetech sounds almost too good to be true, i get a discount from federal mogul parts and am wondering if speed pro pistons and national/federal mogul bearings are good? oh and what about a sealed power camshaft, i work for federal mogul and get a discount on all those brands.

Re: Rebuild Kit
Pay the machine shop to do it right. Any money you save trying to do it cheaper will likely cost you more in the end. Been there, done that. :-)
