LG4 wont start

LG4 wont start
Hi all,
I have an 87 LG4 Camaro and i manage to get it started 2 days ago and take it for a spin. Today i tried to start the old girl but the following happened:
Engine turns over followed by a slight ticking noise, followed by a bit of a grinding and finally a **** off big CLUNK. While the clunk is happening Petrol/smoke plumes from the carb.
The sound sounds like teeth skipping or grinding but the flex plate manages to turn until the sound happens but by that stage i dont want to push it so i stop cranking the engine.
I dropped the starter and had a look at it and everything seems ok (it turns) but then again it could be ****ed... i dunno.
Any ideas? This is pissing me off. Im gonna check the plugs now to see if their fouled up but i doubt it.
