help, wont start after 5 speed swap.

Car is an 86 iroc z. Was an lb9/700r4. Car ran great before the swap, allways took a bit to start when cold, but ran pretty good. We swapped to a t5, nuetral safety switch is wired up, and will turn over. Car IS getting fuel, shrader valve shows it, and I can smell it as well while turning it over. Car IS getting spark, but seems "lame" when i put a plug in a wire and turn it over.

I don't get it, its got a new cap/rotor/plugs/wires and I am pretty sure that we did the tranny swap exactly how we should have. It just turns over and kind of "hiccups" here and there with a slight back fire. What should I check? I am beginning to think its ecm related.

Thanks in advance guys.

Sounds like the timing is off. Did you take the distributor out? It may be off 180 degrees.

I agree with Jv9999, sounds like you are 180* out

Never took the dist out.... has a new coil as well. Its strange, it ran fine before. Now, as I turn it over, it barly back fires, and just sounds odd. It has fuel and seems to have spark, enough to slightly ignite, but like at the wrong time. All I did was take the cap off. That's why I am thinking it might be the ecu or something of that nature. Any other ideas on what I should check? Timing should have never changed.

However, with the cap off, I had to "key" the motor to turn it over a few times to pull the old tq converter out... that wouldn't have an effect on it would it? I wouldn't think so.

Did you mash it against the firewall? Damage the cap? Easy to do while swapping the trans. Stills sounds ignition related to me.

Is the distributor loose? If so you could have twisted it while changing the cap which would throw your timing off. Did you double then triple check your spark plug wires to ensure that they are installed in the correct firing order and in the correct position on the cap?

Re: help, wont start after 5 speed swap.

I had removed the cap before pulling the tranny to insure that no damage would have took place. I had checked the wires for correct placement like 10 times and even moved them around as well (all of them clockwise and counter clock wise) and it literally. Made no differece what so ever. Same dumb hiccup sound and will NOT fire up. The distributer seems tight, and does not look like it moved at all. Everything looks the same. I'm going to try an install the old distributer and see if it makes a difference, the car ran great before the swap, however, the car did sit for over a month as I was gathering parts.

Re: help, wont start after 5 speed swap.

Update. I played with it again tonight, put the other cap on, and still no start. Went back to the new cap, rotor, and coil, and still no start. I tested the plug wire again with another plug and turned it over and now there is no spark, and the back fire sound is gone. Just turns over. I am thinking internal parts of the dist are shot. I am hoping for a simple fix....
