What the heckkk is this!! PIC INCLUDED!helpppp!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have a 1990 iroc z 350
When i go to work in the morning it always takes me about 7 trys to get the camaro to start up i ususally let the fuel pump prime with my foot on the gas it seems to help it start. When the car heats up it runs great and fires right up. But after it cools down it starts all over again. I can smell fuel every once and awhile too. I dont know how to really check for anything either. I just bought the car. The owner said the fuel injectors run hot pn the car idk what exactly that means? Please someone help! Also when i brake to a stop i hear a banging noise er maybe a back fire? Also twise when i started it up i pressed down the pedal to the floor and had no power and went nowhere then the iroc died. HELP!~!~~!!!!

Today I went searching for the possible problem and I found this umm can you tell me what that is and if maybe it is My problemm!!!???!?!?

That is definitely a problem! Those lines need fixed - I'm surprised the car ran at all.

Re: What the heckkk is this!! PIC INCLUDED!helpppp!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Fuel pump out, fuel pump return, evap and pressure valve. It would be the evap and pressure valve lines that are shot here. Return doesn't look good either and I see fuel stains

better put some fresh fuel injection rated hose on all of them

2:if they are just rubber hoses and they probably are, replace them one at a time so u dont mix them up and dont forget the hose clamps.

Re: What the heckkk is this!! PIC INCLUDED!helpppp!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here's what ya need ta do. First measure the diameter of the metal lines. That measurement is the size of hose you need. Go to the parts store of your choice and ask them for rubber hose THAT IS FUEL LINE GRADE very important!!!!!!!! Get about 3ft to be on the safe side. Also get eight clamps. Now take off one hose, easiest way to do it is cut a slit and "peel" the hose off as they'll be stuck on. Cut a section of hose so that it overlaps the pipe about 1.5" on each side. Slip two clamps on then attach the hose. Tighten the clamps. Repeat the above steps and shazam your done. Should take you 20-30 minutes.
Good luck
Alex

BTW: While you in there you might as well replace you fuel pump and sending unit, 22 years old they're probably ready for it.

Re: What the heckkk is this!! PIC INCLUDED!helpppp!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ask for fuel injection type hose, it's not the same as regular old fuel line like used on a carburetor.

Re: What the heckkk is this!! PIC INCLUDED!helpppp!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, originally they were but someone cut them for who knows what reason and used rubber lines to splice them back together.

Here's what it should have looked like

Re: What the heckkk is this!! PIC INCLUDED!helpppp!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No, the lines are cut...you can even see it in the pic..you circled it out. Without cutting the lines there's next to no way to get the rubber all the way over there unless you slit it lengthwise and use it as an anti rattle cushion. But the rubber lines are not straight, you can see them being bent and expanded where they are slid over the steel tube and narrowed down where there's just rubber (2nd line from the top right under the hose clamp), that tells me the lines were all cut and connected again with the rubber lines. How did you take that pic? Did someone cut the trunk area to get at the tank? If so, the steel lines were cut so you can remove the fuel sending unit without dropping the tank and the lines are used to put it back together. 4 hose clamps on the feed line only. The short sections connect the return line and the others are the pressure valve and evap canister line. The return line especially has a potential of creating a big fuel leak. The fact that someone skimped on doing it right doesn't mean you should't. Someone simply ran out of hose and used very short sections. This is a bubba repair!!!

Bottom line, someone cut it...now you need to make it right again with some fuel injection rated hose. Easy peasy.

Re: What the heckkk is this!! PIC INCLUDED!helpppp!!!!!!!!!!!!!

oh ok yeah i see what you are saying i thought you ment the whole hose was rubber...
Yes the trunk is cut to the fuel tank so i don have to drop the tank when i replace the lines. Questio though is this a easy job im only 17 not much of a mechanic =/
But dont have the money to have someone else do it. So I wont need to jack the car up or anything like that right? Could you tell me the best way to replace them easily?
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR HELP MAN..

Re: What the heckkk is this!! PIC INCLUDED!helpppp!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Can you cut a hose to length, push it over the tube and use a screwdriver to tighten down some hose clamps (and get some proper ones!!)?

Re: What the heckkk is this!! PIC INCLUDED!helpppp!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, but the lines are not all the same sizes so measure them and note down what ID hose you need. Then go get the hose and the hose clamps.

You really don't need 4 clamps on the pressure line but the problem is those lines are completely smooth, there's no bead on them like normally on a steel line to hose transition to keep the hose from popping off. There's also no room to work in there so you'll have to make due with that. I would use a longer section of hose on that one for sure so it has less chance of popping off (and creating a very large fuel leak, straight out of the pump) 4 clamps on the rubber where it's slipped over the hard line would add a little more security.

Re: What the heckkk is this!! PIC INCLUDED!helpppp!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Given what lines are open to the air, it certainly explains the "fuel smell". Your tank is venting vapor straight to atmosphere.

Could my problem also be my fuel injectors?
or fuel pump?

Re: What the heckkk is this!! PIC INCLUDED!helpppp!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am not trying to put you down, but your best bet is to save up $20 and have someone with a little mechanical ability do this. It seems that you honestly know very little about working on cars and the fuel system is a dangerous place to start learning, even for a simple fix which is what you need.

To answer your question, take it one step at a time. If repairing the lines does not work then start looking elsewhere.

Re: What the heckkk is this!! PIC INCLUDED!helpppp!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If the previous owner of the car did that to the lines I'd like to see the hole he cut to access the lines, I bet that isn't pretty either. And I would agree that if you don't know enough about repairs to look at that mess and not know in 2 sec. how to repair it then take it to someone who knows what they are doing, fuel lines are not for beginners, your life could be a risk here and if the patch over the tank is a poor one flames could get into the car quick.
