After 5 long restoration years, I tried to start my fully restored 1991 GTA. However, when I turn the key the new Walbro fuel pump will not prime. I checked the fuses and wiring and everything seems to be fine. I tried searching and did not find a "silver bullet" solution. Can anyone provide a process that I should follow to identify the issue? Mechanically I am good, electrically I have little experience.

Any help would be VERY appreciated! I want to hear this thing run!!!

 

Did you verify power at the tank? When the engine isn't running, you only get power for about 5 seconds.

Your timed fuel pump relay may be the problem (don't ask me where it is, I don't have an EFI 3rd gen).

 

I replaced the relay tonight and it did not change anything. I found the fuel pump test connector and jumped it directly to the positive terminal, which turned on the pump. At this point, the relay is new, as well as the fuse, so I am guessing the ECM may be bad. Can anyone verify?

 

My friends 91 camaro had the same problem you describe, and it was the ecm, so id say thats the problem.

 

I just called and Advance Auto parts has a new one for $49, so it is a no brainer to get a new one. It sat in my basement for about 4 years, so chances are that static killed it.

 

I had the same problem when i switched fuel pumps. Turns out it was a bad fuel pump sending unit. Ya know the one that is supposed to tell ya how much gas is in the tank..well it does a bit more than that i guess. Expensive dealer part, I found mine on ebay for 90 bucks. Once i put it in all was good in the world except for the problem i poseted about a few minutes ago.....Wife is fed up..please help!!!

 

Good point but I replaced that too! Everything in my fuel system is brand new. Fuel tank, sending unit, pump, lines, fuel rail, fuel pressure regaulator. So, I am really stumped. I bought a new ECU last night and am going to install it today to see if it resolved the issue.

Problem is fixed! I replaced the positive battery terminal and forgot that there was a jumper that went to a plug. I added this to the new battery cable and plugged it into a lonely male connector which solved the issue. I know how full fuel and used my adjustable fuel pressure regulator to set the pressure at 50 PSI.

Supposedly, it is ALDL pin G

 

Actually I found that they deleted that in the later model ALDLs and put a Fuel Pump Test Hot lead up by the relay on the drivers side. But I appreciate the help. There is no G on my ALDL...that was the first clue lol.
