Check Engine Light High RPM
I have a 1983 Crossfire Injected Trans Am 305. Recently I have noticed a difference in the car. I will start my car up and everything will be running fine, until i slow down at a stop light and my car RPM's up once I stop and pushes the car forward and the check engine light pops on. Once this happens the car seems like its struggling for gas. I will step on the gas and about 2 seconds later the car will respond. Any ideas on what this would be would be greatly appreciated.

It would be helpful to us if you could see if you have any trouble codes retained in the ECM memory when the Check Engine light comes on.
To get the codes, you will need to locate the ECM under dash connector. It should be behind a removable cover plate on the front of the dash, just above where your right knee would be. You will also need a short piece of wire or paper clip to reterive any stored codes. To get the codes...
"As a bulb and system check, the CHECK ENGINE light will come on with the Ignition switch "ON" and the engine not running. It the TEST terminal is then grounded ( on the under dash connector found above short terminal A to terminal B. These two terminals are at the right end of the top row of termianls on the under dash connector) the light will flash code "12", whcih indicates the self-diagonostic system is working. A code "12" consists of ONE flash, followed by a short pause and then TWO flashes in quick succession. After a longer pause, the code repeats two more times.
When the engine is started the CHECK ENGINE light will remain ON momentarily and then turn off. If the CHECK ENGINE light remains ON, the self-diagnostic system has detected a problem. If the test terminal is then grounded the trouble code will flash three times. If more than one problem has been detected, each trouble code will flash three times. Trouble codes will flash in numeric order (lowest number code first). The trouble code series will repeat as long as the TEST termianl is grounded."
So run the self test first, then start the engine and reterive any stored codes. Note that some codes may be stored even though the CHECK ENGINE light is not on continously. In that case, the problem is interment.
On the CrossFire engine, the trouble codes can range from 12 to 55. The code numbers are not continous so there will be gaps in the series. With thses codes, the 82 Shop Manual has 40 pages of trouble shooting charts to determine what the problem may be and how to fix it.
So getting and posting the trouble codes is the first step in resolving your problem.
