How to remove crankshaft pulley?
Hi all, I am installing an underdrive crank pulley on my 91 L98 TPI. Ok, I have done this before on other cars, but I was wondering how some of you may have done this on the TPI motor. I was thinking there is probably an access plate or something between the engine and trans. I was planning on just putting a long screw driver in there to stop the engine from turning. I am just looking for instructions on this one. Thanks

I don't think the large center bolt needs to come out to change the pulley... of course, I may be wrong. (but, I don't think so.) just use a ratchet, and the right size socket, with minimal extensions, and whack the ratchet handle with your hand to get the bolt to break loose. Shouldn't really be a problem.

Re: How to remove crankshaft pulley?
All my factory TPI's ( w/ serp belt ) have had a large 1/4" thick washer that fits over the bottom pulley , secured by the crank bolt ; needs to be removed before pulley will come off.
You have a WTF moment after you removing the three pulley bolts and is still won't come off because it is hard to see crank bolt hidden inside pulley.
The screwdriver in the flexplate works but is a two man operation as the screwdriver usually falls out before you can put load on it
If you can get a spark plug out you can push 3 ft of nylon rope in and wind the piston back against that to stop the engine turning.Rotate engine opposite way until it stops to tighten

After you remove the 3 pulley mount bolts, take out the balancer bolt. As mentioned above, it has a large washer on it that also holds the pulley on. When reassembling, torque the balancer bolt to 65 pounds.
I normally use an impact gun to remove the balancer bolt. Using hand tools, you'll need to stop the crank from rotating. Holding a screwdriver in the flexplate normally works.
