Car is stuttering!

Ok, just a couple days ago i took my car to the shop cuz it was stuttering really bad and not wanting to go. So he said it was the throttle position sensor voltage was low. It was at .22, so he set it to .5. I fixed it.............until today. I was just leaving for work, and the car started and then started like gurgelling or something then shut off. it wouldnt start after that. Then finally after like 20 mins, it finally started. My friend followed me just to make nothing else happened. Well at a stop light, i went then it started stuttering really bad again, then all of the sudden BANG! there was a REALLY REALLY loud pop. i drove like 20 mph to the gas station. My friend said there was like a flame a foot in length come out one side my exhaust and then the other side was a bunch of smoke. It seemed ok when i drove back home. what could be causing this? Do i just need a new tps or what? help needed, thx

Check your ignition module and coil. As for the gurgling sound that usually happens when youre running on the hot side. The loud bang and flame out the exhaust seems like an ignition issue. If it will not start after this i would venture to say that maybe the timing chain could be at fault as your valves would no longer be timed with the cylinders. If it will start and run no matter how crappy, then id look at your coil and ignition module

Re: Car is stuttering!

Had a similar problem with stuttering. Run your car with the TPS disconnected. If it runs better than you may have a bad sensor.

Re: Car is stuttering!

Have you had any luck with this? I'm having the exact same problem with my '88 5.7 TPI. Sometimes it won't start for 10-20 minutes, then it fires up but stutters horribly on takeoff and backfires. There must be something related between the not starting and stuttering as I had no problems before, maybe it's a fuel issue?
