Are computer chips all theyre cracked up to be? Like a stage 3?

Not from what I've read on here. Better to spend money on good parts that will boost power. Once you start adding some power to stock engine, you need a custom tune anyways.

From everything I have read/seen/experienced, the "performance" chips really don't do much. You would be far better off investing in the equipment to burn your own chips, once you get to the point in your mods that it becomes necessary. Most of the stuff (except the laptop) can be had for about the price of one of those performance chips.
