How to figure out engine size

Hey guys - can anyone tell me how to figure out what type of engine is in my 88 GTA? The previous owner told me it has a new 350 5.0L put into it with only 30K. Not that I don't believe him, but I want to know for myself what it truly has so I know exactly what parts to get when needed.

I can't find any visible metal plates on the top or bottom of the engine. But maybe I'm just not looking in the right place. Can anyone help me out? Where would I find out what type of engine is actually in my car? THANKS!

Re: How to figure out engine size

350 is 5.7L not 5.0L

Since the 350 and 305 have different bore sizes, the easiest way to determine what it may be is from a block casting number. You won't have a 350 if the casting says it's a 305 block.

It's unlikely the engine will be any other size although it may be bored .030" which will give you a slight increase in displacement.

The casting number is behind the driver's side head on the bellhousing. Newer models will also have 5.0L or 5.7L cast beside the number. It's usually difficult to see with the engine in the car but not impossible.

Re: How to figure out engine size

The 3 letter code stamped on the block pad at front will tell you what the engine was orginally from / size / trans
Also has part of VIN code so you can see if it is the orginal engine

Re: How to figure out engine size

Thanks man. I could've sworn I've looked in that area, but I'll look a bit closer now that I have more of an exact spot. I know for sure it's not the original engine.

So if/when I find the engine code, what would it tell me? Looking at the label in your picture, I'm assuming it's not going to just say "305" or "350". THANKS AGAIN!

some/all newer blocks will say 5.0 5.7 on the rear of the block driverside.
