leak? not sure where its from
leak? not sure where its from
ok got a 91 rs 305tbi. I have noticed a little oil drips under the car but im not sure if its oil or what cause the oil level is always fine. the leak i know is coming from behind the oil pan but right in front of what im guessing is the transmission pan(silver pan in middle of car, sry dont know much about this stuff yet) so what could be the problem a bad gasket, loose bolt or what? also oil pressure with drop a little below 30 when stopped but go up to 30 on gauge when i drive. is tht normal?
sry for the question i looked it up but couldnt fine anything.
thnx,
alex

Re: leak? not sure where its from
Its probably from the rear crank seal, my '90 iroc-z has the same leak in the same spot. I have asked the same question to a few friends who were 3rd gen owners, (2 camaro, 1 firebird) they all suspected the crank seal, indeed theirs did it too, I believe its a common point of failure on a chevy small block.
Get a $5 drip tray from walmart, put on your garage floor.
In the Haynes manual it does give instructions on how to replace the 2 piece seal, with the engine in the car. I discussed this with mechanic friend who advised me not to attempt it, as I could end up unable to put the new, or old seal back in, and have to pull the engine to rebuild.

It goes without saying that you should check your fuild levels regularly if you have a leak. Running the engine or transmission in a low oil condition will cause you problems. Also check your powersteering res on the left side of the engine below the alternator.
I'm originally from the UK, where _every_ British made car leaks like a colendar :-) The old timers I used to work with reconed that because they had to keep topping up their motors, they lasted longer, they were always getting fresh oil!
I also use cat litter to clean up the oil stains, pour some on to soak up the excess, then scrub some into the stain and it will turn to dust and come right out of the concrete.
My IROC had a checkered history, I dont think the oil was changed regularly by its previous owners, and numerous workarounds to the cooling systems were put in. Bypassing the fan relay and removing the thermostat, it also had some faulty sensors, the temp and O2. But thats the risk you run on a 20yr old car! I'm trying to nurse it back to health.
If it sounds good, passes emmssions and has no fault codes I wouldn't worry too much.

Could be your oil pressure sending unit. I think it's on the upper rear of the engine, a little below and toward the driver side of the distributor.

as long as it's only a drip not a big leak it's fine I would bet that almost every guy on here's car drips something ( the original cars that is) . You can do the rear main seal in the car but you have to pull the trans and that's not to fun , as for the oil pressure it will go up and down when you accelerate the exact psi I'm not to sure usually right in the middle of you gauge should be good. Good luck
