Crankshaft windage?

I have included two pics of two "cast crankshafts" The counterweights on the crank that is on the '"Right" from a 89 Police package 350 TBI are so much smoother than that of the other " Left" in the pic. There is virtually no casting flash on it. Was this just for windage and High RPM use?

No, just a difference in the quality of the machined finish.

Re: Crankshaft windage?

So is that the norm for cranks of that era, or is the extra machining because of it being a police interceptor motor? Do you think its strength is greater than that of a basic cast crank?

It's a cast crank like any other. There's nothing magical about supposed "police" engines, they're the same as anything else.

Re: Crankshaft windage?

Im in the process of rebuilding a LT4, and was looking to cut corners on cost, with all the parts i have laying around. My plan was to go with an eagle crank factory rods and hyper pistons. I contemplated throwing in that crank but i guess that settles it. For the money the added strength of an eagle cast steel crank would be way better. Cant complain for 169.00 bucks from summit.

Do not use eagle cast cranks, I have seen those things in pieces from just regular driving!

+1 !!!

"added strength of an eagle cast steel crank" ...........now, THAT's funny!
Do not ever buy a cast aftermarket crank thinking you're updrading from a factory cast crank. GM cast cranks are the best there are..........unless you're going forged, you're pissing in the wind.

Re: Crankshaft windage?

WOW! that some carnage. That was a 383 and had to have been due to an improper balance or something, to cause that kind of failure. I know a few people pushing 450 horses at the track with an eagle cast steel crank, LT1 rods, and a little squeeze. Granted those internals may be living on borrowed time. I have been told to stay away from scat by my machine shop because of several balancing issues, and know I see that post. Im just building a 350 400HP's or so. If I had the cash I would go with crazy callies. After seeing that I might have to save up for a forged crank. Point well taken.

For that power level, use the stock crank. Recondition if necessary.
