E.G.R. deleat on T.P.I. car?
Hello! I am about to buy a PCMforless chip for my 87 iroc with TPI and waas wondering about if I should go ahead and do the EGR deleat? I have already got rid of the AIR stuff and the cat and have removed the AC compressor and am not worried about emissions where I live (Kentucky). They reccomend keeping the Evap canister but thought I would ask you 3rd gen guys about that as well. As far as mods I have a comp XFI 280 cam .576 Intake .571 exhaust, 280/288 duration, 113 LSA. I have a set of AFR 1041 heads on the way (killing me to wait till Feb 17 for delivery lol) 1.6 roller rockers, MSD, flat top 10 to 1 compression pistons, (thats a close estimate on the compression not shure exacty what it is) adjustable fuel pressure reg, venom 21lbs injectors, (getting bigger ones as soon as I get a for shure recommended size) headers, stock ported runners and plenum, stock intake,(upgrades coming for all tpi parts as well). I remember reading that the egr does something with the timing but if I can deleat all that stuff Id rather so theres less to go wrong and the tuning will be more stright forward. Ill be using the car for street/strip. Also it asked if I want to deleat the 9th injector which would be nice if I can without having to change a bunch of other stuff. They dont make the sensor that triggers the 9th injector anymore anyway, so if I can deleat the 9th injector and remove that sensor that would be killer. But im not shure if thats how it will work on my 165 ECM. All help welcomed and thanks, this site has really helped me so much with my 3rd gen TPI machine!!!!!!

EGR doesn't really hurt anything, and in some cases it helps. As long as you've got room for the components, and the passages in your heads and intake, why delete it?

The '89 +'165 tune has startup enrichment so it doesn't need the CSI

Ide delete it. Although it dosnt really hurt performance or take up much in the line of space or added complexity why keep it? I mean if you had all your emissions stuff Ide say keep it just to remain emissions legal even though it dosnt really matter in your case. The big thing i have against it are as follows:
A. most of the parts in our EGR system have been discontinued and although can be worked around why bother?
B. The replacement EGR valve which has not been discontinued has been for the most part replaced with positive type EGR valves (in place of the factories negative type) and they dont work well with modified exhaust systems as the positive type works based on back pressure making them somewhat useless anyways.
C. Although they dont add much complexity when the fail (and they will) from being plugged with carbon to the point it will not flow or seize it can cause problems with the running condition of your car. Why compromise reliability if it provides no real benefit?
D. Cost/ maintenance. EGR valves need to be cleaned from time to time and all parts will eventually need to be replaced. In the case of the EGR valve this even includes gaskets for taking apart the intake. The EGR valve varies in price from as low as $50 all the way on up to $170 depending on weather your willing to sell your soul to the devil for a cheap autozone piece or want a original AC delco part. Napa (who i find had good stuff) has them for just over 100. The temp switch is discontinued and i know of no replacement. The EGR solenoid is discontinued but there are ones that can be made to work but thats another $20-$40 part.
What it really boils down to is what does an EGR valve do for you? Beyond emmissions (which are already partially dismantled so its not like it would be emissions legal otherwise) it really does nothing for you. On the other hand keeping it raises some issues down the road. It really isnt a big deal either way I just see no reason to keep it and a few minor reasons not to. Plus keep in mind in you upgrade heads many of them dont have the ports to allow it to work anyways without going to a set up like on the vette.

excellent points thunder! the cost vs what it does is my sticking point . I know it will eventually start giving me trouble when it fails and if I deleat it thats one more thing Iv eliminated from diagnosis. I just wanted to make shure that it wouldnt hurt me in some whay I didnt know about. and to make shure the 165 ecm would work without the 9th injector. so thanks alot as always good info & points.
